The Building Department, located on the first floor of City Hall, is responsible for ensuring building, zoning, electrical, mechanical and plumbing codes are followed. This department also investigates complaints pertaining to public nuisances, blight, weeds, zoning, signage, noise, illegal dumping, and other common violations found in the City of Camilla's Code of Ordinances and Zoning Ordinance. The Building Department has a vital role in keeping the community from becoming blighted and unattractive to those who live, work and visit our city. Building, electrical, specialty, plumbing, sewer connection, demolition, sign, party/large gathering, parade/march/assembly, and yard sale permits are issued by the Building Department.
Prior to beginning any land use, construction, or similar project you need to apply for and receive the proper permits. A good measure to determine if a permit is required is if the electrical, plumbing, structural, or lot coverage will be affected in anyway by your project, you need a permit and subsequent inspections. Examples of common projects requiring building permits are decks, patios, roofs, driveways, fences, water heaters, air conditioners, sheds, swimming pools, and other miscellaneous work. Demolition, new construction, additions, or remodeling also require applicable permits and inspections.
All building activity and inspections are subject to the 2012 International Building, Plumbing, Electrical, Gas, Mechanical and Housing Codes as adopted by the State of Georgia. This department also enforces and ensures compliance with the Storm Water Control ordinance and the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission regulations. It is best to begin thinking about your project and the building code requirements before you begin construction in order to avoid problems and delays. An early conversation with the Building Department can save you time and protect your best interests. If you are unsure what permits and inspections are required for your project, contact a staff member for clarification at (229) 336-2207.
